You know when I like to listen to music the most?
When I’m working on something that takes a while, like a home improvement project, an afternoon of baking, pulling weeds in the garden, and this weekend…decorating the house for the holidays.
And since I’m usually moving, banging and clattering stuff around, I can’t stand wearing earbuds. Those are only good for quiet and immobile times.
I used to have a plug-in speaker with a dock, but I lost the remote control, rendering it useless. But now I have a new speaker: the Nyne NB-200 Portable Bluetooth-Enabled Speaker (with built-in microphone).
I wanted to stream music from my iPod, so to pair the two devices, I turned on my iPod’s Bluetooth feature, pushed the Bluetooth button on the Nyne speaker and BAM, they were connected. So easy!
(Compatible with iPhones, iPods or iPads and other Bluetooth-enabled smartphones and tablets, plus it has a 3.5mm Stereo Aux-in port for others.)
Oh, I forgot to tell you that before I did that, I charged the speaker itself by connecting it to my PC via the included USB cable. When fully powered, it will play up to 5 hours of music, and the battery indicator will flash red to let you know when it needs to be recharged.
So anyway, it scared the heck out of me once the Bluetooth was enabled because it started playing a song right away, and it caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting the sound to be so crisp and strong out of such a compact speaker!
The whole room was filled with sound! Color me impressed.
You can also use it as a speaker phone with your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. Pair the devices, and just push the little phone icon to answer the call. The built-in microphone will pick up your voice. Pretty cool, huh?
But wait, there’s more…
It comes with two mounting brackets for handlebars, so it can be attached to your bicycle, a stroller handle, fitness machine or scooter like mine!
The brackets do clamp and lock closed, but I wish the fit was a little more snug. I think the movement and vibrations of my moving scooter are going to cause it to turn on the handlebar making the speaker slide out of position.
However, an easy fix would be for me to put a piece of foam between the handlebar and clamp to make it a tighter fit.
The Bluetooth capability works at a maximum range of 33 feet, and I took it outside (on my video) to test that theory. I love that it works on rechargeable lithium ion batteries, and I’m more than happy with the 5 hours of sound on a single charge.
I also like that it auto-reconnects with Bluetooth, because I don’t keep that feature enabled on either my iPhone or my iPod Touch all the time.
I thought I would use it mostly while on the go, but because it’s such a nice petite size, it fits perfectly on my nightstand, and I really like to stream mellow background music when I’m reading magazines before falling asleep.
One lucky reader will win a Nyne NB-200 Portable Bluetooth Speaker. (ARV $129.95)
